OK

Check the power + the socket

Try a different socket or test the socket with another appliance. Check the fuse box for a tripped breaker. Unplug, wait two minutes, plug back in – modern electronics often just need a reset.

OK

Read the error code

Note the exact code + model number. Most manufacturer codes are documented – your advisor can decode what it means for your specific model during the session.

OK

Clean filters + spray arms

Lint filters in dryers, drain filters in dishwashers + washers, spray-arm holes blocked by debris – these cause a huge share of faults + are designed to be user-serviced. Unplugged, no tools needed.

OK

Rebalance the load

A washer refusing to spin is often an uneven load or an out-of-level machine. Redistribute the laundry, check the machine is level with a spirit level – then run a short cycle.

OK

Check door seals + hinges

Look for food debris, perished rubber or a door that does not close squarely. Clean the seal with warm soapy water. A failing seal is a cheap part for an engineer – but you can spot it yourself.

OK

Defrost the freezer properly

If the freezer is icing up, empty it + let it fully defrost with the door open + towels down. Never chip ice with knives – one puncture writes off the appliance.

NO

Never open the casing

Do not remove panels or attempt internal repairs on any appliance. Capacitors + wiring stay live after unplugging. Internal diagnosis + repair belongs to a qualified engineer – we will tell you when it has reached that point.

NO

Never work on gas appliances

Gas ovens, hobs + tumble dryers: if you smell gas or suspect a gas fault, turn the gas off at the meter, ventilate, + call a Gas Safe registered engineer. We do not give gas guidance beyond that.

NO

No live electrical testing

Never test components with the power connected, + never bypass a plug, fuse or safety cut-out. Anything beyond socket-level checks is engineer territory.
